If You Wonder What the Bible Says About Homosexuality

The rightness or wrongness of homosexuality is a hot topic these days. Any opinion held is cause for controversy. The situation in the U.S. has become quite acute. Some people seem ready to accept homosexuals and lesbians and accord them full rights and equal protection under law.

The climate surely has changed. Should homosexuals be given these rights and protections? Is homosexuality sin? Let's see what the Bible says.

IN THE BEGINNING

On the surface, it may appear that Jesus Christ had nothing to say about homosexuality; the fact is, He did.

One day a group of religious leaders approached Him with a question on the controversial issue of divorce and remarriage. Their intent was to stump Him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?"

Jesus answered, "Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?" (Matthew 19:3-5). Jesus took them back to the beginning, to the first marriage.

Two things stand out clearly in His teaching. First, God created a male and a female. Second, God intended for them to cleave (become glued) together in sexual union as a married couple.

This second point is very important because it reminds us that God expects the male and female married couple to produce children (Genesis 1:27, 28).

It is impossible for same gender unions to procreate. God gave us a model. Any attempt to alter what God has instituted is a violation of His law. It is rebellion.

THE PROGRESS OF REBELLION

In Romans 1:18-32, the Apostle Paul outlines what happens when mankind chooses to walk his own way. He states that God revealed Himself to the human race. Man knew God, but became unthankful and ceased to regard Him as God. Eventually, man's heart became darkened by sin. He created his own gods, and finally God "gave them up."

The world became grossly wicked. Idolatry, homosexuality, animal worship, human sacrifice, and disobedience to parents are just a few of the "accomplishments" of people who turn their back on God.

DISCRIMINATION

One of the frequent complaints of the gay community is that they are being systematically discriminated against as blacks have been. Discrimination is a sin, but do gays have the right to claim this?

Once again, let the Bible speak. When God gave the Jewish people the Law, He specified that the Israelites were not to mistreat any foreigner who desired to join them and serve Jehovah. In fact, the foreigner was to be treated as a family member and loved (Leviticus 19:33, 34).

God makes no such rule concerning the homosexual, however. Homosexuality was not to be tolerated. "Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination" (Leviticus 18:22).

The Bible says that God "made of one blood all nations of men" (Acts 17:26). It is natural to be black or white, but homosexuality is "against nature" (Romans 1:26). The attempt to use racial equality, then, as a base for accepting homosexuality is invalid. Racial differences and sexual perversions are not equal.

IF YOU WANT HELP

Many homosexuals have had traumatic experiences as children. Some have been raped and molested by their own relatives. Others were neglected or have had inadequate adult models.

Thank God, there is help!

1. Acknowledge sexual perversion as sinful. Homosexuality, like adultery or theft or any other sin of the flesh, must be confessed as wrong. We will not overcome any sin that we protect.

2. Seek spiritual life in Christ Jesus. The old life must be exchanged for a new life, and that new life is in Jesus Christ. He came to set captives free (Luke 4:18).

3. Put to death all sinful practices (Colossians 3:5). This means renouncing them and leaving them dead and buried.

4. Avoid sources of temptation. "Put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof" (Romans 13:14).

5. Seek out spiritual fellowship. "But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints" (Ephesians 5:3). Fellowship with other believers gives us spiritual strength.

IF YOU HAVE NOT COME TO CHRIST . . .

COME AS A SINNER

"There is none righteous, no, not one" (Romans 3:10).

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).

COME BELIEVING

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life" (John 5:24).

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9)

"Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out" (John 6:37).

COME NOW

"To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts" (Hebrews 3:15).

"Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth" (Proverbs 27:1).
