Revelation 21:9-14, 21-22:5
To Enter the City Built of God, Believe on the Son and Live in Him
Entrance into “that holy city, new Jerusalem” shall be granted only to those “which are written in the Lamb’s book of life” (Revelation 21:2, 27). Is your name there now?
Believe on the Son. Only through faith in Jesus will your name appear in that book. “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life” (John 3:36). “He that hath the Son hath life” (1 John 5:12). There is no other way. Absolutely none.
Live in faithfulness to the Son. Be true to Him and He will leave your name in His book. “He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life” (Revelation 3:5).
So…is your name written there?
Read Revelation 21:24, 26. What’s a life lesson you can get from one or both of them?
- To walk in that light then, walk in Christ’s life now.
- Human honor and glory are not to be used for personal exaltation.
- Add your honors to the “pile” of Christ’s honors — don’t call attention to them in a self-glorifying way.
The whole point of the Gospel:
- The end of the old and the beginning of the new
- The full, complete, final redemption of mankind
- The return of man to his original perfect, righteous state
- The restoration of an all-encompassing relationship between man and his Creator
- The presently incomprehensible, unending union of man with God
(I excerpted much of the above from material I submitted for the CLE Bible 800 Teacher Guide.)
Written in the Book in the city built of God
What a tremendous promise and comfort God offers to His faithful people in Daniel 12:1 — we “shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book”! After the trials and testings of this life, deliverance comes to the redeemed. As we go through this life with the Master, we can anticipate entering into “that holy city, new Jerusalem” which shall be opened only for those “which are written in the Lamb’s book of life” (Revelation 21:2, 27).
Is your name written there? Read these next verses and be sure!
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life” (John 3:36). “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved” (Mark 16:16). “He that hath the Son hath life” (1 John 5:12). Those three statements may be brief but they are also sure. Jesus is the only way. Walk with Him in newness of life and your name is written in His book.
“He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels” (Revelation 3:5). “Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 10:32). Be true to the Master in word and deed, and He will leave your name in His book. Furthermore, when you stand before God Himself, the Lamb shall speak for you!
Being an overcomer can look very difficult. Well, looks are not deceiving this time, because victorious Christian living is difficult. It’s a battle, in fact. But the only wise God our Saviour ” is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy” (Jude 24). Amen!
Promises for the journey to the city built of God
We, like Abraham, (ought to) have our eyes fixed on a destination which gets ever closer. But the journey gets long. And difficult. And even dreary at times. The previous section has some promises from the One who is both our goal and our Fellow Traveler. Perhaps you, like I, could use a few more.

Found in the city built of God: the missing Tree of life
“In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations” (Revelation 22:2).
“Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” (Revelation 22:14).
Finally, after so long a time, instead of being driven from that tree, we are given access to it:
“So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life” (Genesis 3:24).
“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God” (Revelation 2:7).
