He Died for Peace?
The accolades for
this man have been pouring in profusely from around the globe. The shock of
his unexpected death leaves a nation stunned and many in the world shaking
their heads. A family suddenly deprived struggles with their grief.
Why did he die?
Many say he died for peace. He has been called a martyr for peace. Others have
noted that by his death long-time enemies have been drawn a little closer. And
perhaps these people are all right. I certainly do not know. But I definitely
know this: Yitzhak Rabin did not choose to die. That was not in
his agenda; to fall to an assassin's bullets was not part of his grand scheme
for peace for Israel.
But I do know Someone Who clearly and deliberately chose to die for
peace. That was His agenda; that was an integral part of His "grand
scheme."
"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised
for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and
with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have
turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of
us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth:
he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers
is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from
judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the
land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken"
(Isaiah 53:5-8).
"Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree,
that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes
ye were healed" (1 Peter 2:24).
"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with
God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:1).
